Thanks for reading the first of (hopefully) many Paws Fur a Cause “Pup-Popular” posts! This series will highlight simple ingredients that are beneficial for our dogs’ health…in fact, all of them could be considered “people” or “human” food.
Our first Pup-Popular Ingredient is peanut butter.
Peanut butter is high in protein and rich in B-vitamin, vitamin E, niacin and minerals. Vitamin E contains antioxidants and helps keep your dog’s coat shiny. Peanut butter is high in fat, but contains primarily mono-unsaturated fat which can be heart healthy, in moderation. It is important to use “raw” peanut butter, one that is free of additives like sugar and salt. Much like humans, these ingredients are not beneficial for our canine friends.
Another Great Pup-Popular Idea…
Peanut butter can be used to help give your dog a pill. Coat the pill with a bit of peanut butter, and it may be easier to convince your pooch to take his or her pill.
Keep In Mind…
Some dogs are allergic to peanuts. In addition, while peanuts can be an excellent snack choice for dogs…stay away from feeding your favorite canine macadamia nuts, or food containing macadamia nuts. Just a few of these nuts can be fatal to our 4-legged friends. Stick to raw peanuts.
As always…consider your dog’s overall diet and talk to your veterinarian.
